The Great Gatsby in the re-making?

Several days ago I encountered a news about the new Hollywood production of The Great Gatsby. Baz Luhrmann of Moulin Rouge! (2001) is to direct the principal cast of Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby, Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway and Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan.

I personally could not think of a better substitute for the pair of Robert Redford and Mia Farrow from the 1974 production… We have seen so many of Leo and Tobey in other films, so it is hard for me to expect the ‘perfectability’ of their performances as Jay Gatsby and Nick Carraway. It would be intolerable to see them playing their title roles in The Great Gatsby simply and easily as one of many parts they have done before. It has been almost 30 years since the last production, but the literary impact of the novel has not diminished. People do still read The Great Gatsby and be impressed by it.

After seeing Leonardo DiCaprio as Gatsby and Carey Mulligan as Daisy, I may not want to see them in any other roles… That is how much I love the book.

  1. Carey Mulligan does have a bit of Mia Farrow about her I think. I just didn’t love this book so much though.
